You’re suspicious of the idea that your compassion alone should sustain you, but don’t think you can be. You’re irritable and depleted and restless, but don’t think you’re allowed to be.

Let me say it loud and clear: Your distress, whether it’s simmering or boiling over, has nothing to do with your abilities as a care professional, how much you care about your clients, or your own goodness and value. Your overwhelm is an outstretched hand, waving to get your attention, trying to grab you and save you from going under. Your dissatisfaction is a response to an unsustainable narrative of caregiving and care-jobbing that nobody asked for, nobody wants, and yet very few feel safe breaking from.

It’s time to be one of those few. It’s time to be a pioneer- not only to make the way more sustainable and more generative for yourself, but for other generations of care providers just like you.

Let’s start with this: no, you do not need to be a mother, or a woman, in order to operate a matriarchal business. Matriarchal businesses are based in matriarchal values: collaboration, creation, wisdom, trust, nurturing, attunement, generativity, and conservation. Matriarchal businesses are in opposition to patriarchal and supremacist business structures and practices, which are unfortunately the norm and model.

The Matriarchy is a feminist business run by a feminist founder. As a white, cis woman, I am continuously confronting my various privileges and how they move me through the world, and I require that my clients be somewhere in this process as well. It is not possible to confront The Mommy Complex without acknowledging the many insidious systems of oppression that allow it to thrive. While the majority of my my clients may well be white cis women like me, it’s imperative that we engage in the clumsy, imperfect process of betraying those privileges throughout our work together.
